Research Fridays

6 one-hour sessions will be offered during the semester to showcase various library resources relevant to the research process. Participants will be introduced to the topic and related tools/resources with additional time provided for guided exploration.

Format: 20-30 minutes demo/lecture/activities; 30-40 minutes “tutored” work time.

9/14: Finding a researchable topic: Google & Wikipedia are your friends!

You’ve probably been warned by one or more professors not to use Google or Wikipedia. In this workshop, you’ll explore how these convenient resources can actually help you find some good ideas for a research topic. At the end of our session, you’ll have a researchable topic--something that’s not too broad, not too narrow, and not fake.

9/28: Creating a library of your own: Managing citations

Do you wish you could remember the title of the journal article you used for an assignment two years ago? Do you feel like you’ve repeated the same search for information before? How about saving information that might come in handy for an assignment next semester? Find out what tools work best for you to organize your information resources and save time on your next research project!

10/12: Finding a researchable topic: Google & Wikipedia are your friends!

10/26: Plagiarism traps and how to avoid them

“But I didn’t mean to” is no excuse when it comes to plagiarism. You have to know what’s right and what’s wrong when quoting, summarizing, and referencing other people’s works (including words, art, and music). You’ll leave this session with a better understanding of the rules and with resources to consult when writing a paper or doing creative work.

11/9: Fast and furious: Researching library sources effectively

Whether you need five sources for your paper that’s due tomorrow, or you have five weeks to do your research, knowing how to navigate the library’s resources is key. In this workshop, we’ll share some tips and tricks on how to improve your research skills for faster and better results.
